Jeans: The trends for autumn/winter 2013

I’ve done my research and shopped ‘til I dropped, to assess the biggest denim trends for autumn/winter. While you’d be forgiven for digging your favourite pieces out of the wardrobe from last year, it would also be something of a crime against fashion to ignore the hottest trends for upcoming season, which I’ve so carefully put together for you.

For winter weather, I’m usually a fan of dark, tight-fitting denim and my wardrobes are bursting with outfits from the last few seasons. This year however, brings a refreshing change, with an emerging trend for grey skinny jeans. I fell in love with these Paige Denim grey skinnies, available online from mywardrobe.com, the minute I saw them. The pale grey tone is bang on trend, as is the subtle zip detail. Grunge is big this season, especially for denim, so zips and distressed patches are a fabulous addition to any pair of jeans.
I’m planning a monochrome look when I step out in grey jeans this season. An outfit of solid colour like black or grey is sophisticated and versatile, so it’s perfect for most social occasions. Oversized knitwear is back this season (when is it never fabulous during chilly weather?) and something like this vintage style grey jumper, from boohoo.com, will be amazing with grey skinnies. Finish off the outfit with black boots and bold, black nail varnish for casual drinks with friends or a shopping trip with the girls.
Ladies, you can tell your guys that they won’t need to padlock their wardrobes anymore. Their jeans are no longer in demand, as designers have acknowledged our passion for relaxed, slouchy, baggy denim and created ones just for us. Take a look at these distressed boyfriend jeans, from the collection of Rag and Bone jeans at Trilogy Stores, which are better than anything I’ve ever claimed for my man’s wardrobe. Boyfriend jeans capture the trend for grunge perfectly, especially in distressed designs like this, yet they’re fabulous when offset with a pair of overly feminine stilettos, in something like bright fuchsia.
Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten to let you in on the latest denim trends for when you hit the clubs this autumn. It looks like we’re in for a marvellously retro season, as we celebrate metallic denim. Gold, silver and copper jeans are hot right now and the perfect addition to your wardrobe for the final nights out of the year, before we have to battle sub-zero temperatures. French Connection have released these stunning metallic denim trousers that would look great with a navy blazer and power platforms.
Beware when experimenting with metallic! The classic flare has also emerged as a top trend for this season, although you should strictly limit this cut to dark denim. Flares in a shimmering gold may have people thinking you’re preparing your Halloween costume early this year… and the theme is Saturday Night Fever!
